SUMMARY:Campra\, Miserere and Requiem
DESCRIPTION:Campra\, Miserere\nCampra\, Messe de Requiem \nLes Arts Florissants\, W. Christie \nAndré Campra (1660-1744)\, a Provençal composer and renowned choirmaster at the cathedrals of Toulon\, Arles\, Toulouse and Paris\, wrote this Requiem mass probably shortly after his arrival in Paris in 1694\, while he was director of the Maîtrise de Notre-Dame. Perhaps composed for a service in memory of the Archbishop of Paris\, Monseigneur François de Harlay\, in November 1695\, this mass belongs to the period during which Campra’s religious music was reaching its full maturity\, as traditional polyphony is treated with the same expressiveness as solo arias\, which already announce the composer’s taste for opera – it was at this time that he began writing his opera-ballet L’Europe galante. The instrumental passages\, far from being simple preludes\, interludes or postludes\, also bear witness to the marked sensitivity of the future assistant master of the Chapelle Royale of Versailles.

SUMMARY:Haydn - Mozart
DESCRIPTION:Haydn\, Die Worte des Erlösers am Kreuze\, Hob.XX:2\nMozart\, Vesperae solennes de confessore\, K.339 \nLes Arts Florissants\, W. Christie \n  \nThe Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross is one of Joseph Haydn’s major works\, along with The Creation and The Seasons. Composed in response to a commission from the Church of Santa Cueva in Cádiz\, Spain for Holy Week\, this piece was written in four versions\, the last of which\, premiered in Vienna in 1796\, takes the form of a large oratorio for soloists\, choir and orchestra. It is the last work that Haydn conducted in public during his lifetime. \nHaydn is associated with his most famous contemporary\, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart\, whose Solemn Vespers of a Confessor complete the program. If the two works require the same orchestral forces and are similar in their religious dimension\, they are also balanced by their complementary tonalities\, the solemnity of Haydn finding its counterpoint in the joyful lightness of Mozart.
